This is a pre-order for a black hoodie with hand-screen printed image of a wheat-paste installation created by Joseph Cuillier for an exhibition with House of Hayes in Savannah, GA in 2015. This is a fundraiser for The Black School House, with 100% of profits being donated to their gofundme (gofundme.com/f/theblackschool ). Please see below for more info. Pre-sale will run through the end of the month of February.
@THEBLACKSCHOOL is in the fundraising process to build a 21st century schoolhouse, expanding Black radical art programming into a community center providing civic engagement activities for New Orleans' 7th Ward. Currently at ~$289k of their $310k with less than two weeks remaining, Together in Paradise wants to support the Black School by donating 100% of profits from the sale of this special edition of hoodies, screen printed with an image of Jospeh Cuillier’s installation, to the fundraising efforts for building the Black Schoolhouse. Feel free to also donate directly to the gofundme, time is of the essence and I truly hope to make a significant contribution by the end of this fundraising term. Thank you so much for your help and support in reaching their goal!!
A lil backstory:
I first met artist and educator, Joseph Cuillier in San Francisco where we were both enrolled in some summer courses at the Academy of Art in 2009. We maintained a friendship and having long admired and respected his work, I was excited to include him as a feature in magazine project HXH Quarterly (House of Hayes) a few years later in 2014. As the year of these magazine issues came to a close, my sister and I hosted an exhibition in Savannah, GA’s Starland Dairy building, which was transformed into an open air art playground with all of the artists’ work who were featured throughout the year. Joe traveled down from NYC and created this wheatpaste installation for the show which continued a series called “Abstracts” of this type of text based wheat pasted public works (see more at josephcuillier.com ).
ABOUT THE BLACK SCHOOL:
Joseph and his partner Shani Peters founded The Black School in 2016, an experimental art school teaching Black/PoC students and allies to become agents of change through art workshops on radical Black politics and public interventions that address local community needs. With socially engaged artists, designers, and educators working at the intersections of K-12/university teaching, art, design, and activism, all TBS programming is structured around our core principles of Black Love, self-determination, and wellness.
